Bebop was more than a sub genre of Black American music. It was a social movement, it represented the a new way of phrasing. Its creators changed the harmonic and rhythmic structure of jazz music. “Be-Bop” is one of the many tunes Dizzy wrote that remain fresh, modern and a challenge to execute. I wanted to think about how it might feel to engage with the spirit of Bebop in today’s social context.
